Pierre-Paul, Jason: Giants pick at 15 (Titans take Derrick Morgan with very next pick)

      Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Giants fans who were hoping for McClain at 15 were crying and cursing Al Davis when the Raiders took McClain at number 8. We watched the Eagles jump ahead of us to grab the DE they need.

And we still saw a lot of familiar names around at 15. Dan Williams, Sean Witherspoon, Derrick Morgan, Jason Pierre-Paul, Mike Iupati… I had a feeling it would be Morgan (seems like the BPA) or none of the above and a total shock.

Jason Pierre-Paul was a bit of a surprise. Maybe there’s something we don’t know about Morgan? At 6′5″ and 270 he has protypical DE size and since Kiwi hasn’t proven to be much of a pass rusher (yet) and since Osi has to prove himself (again) DE could be considered a position of need I guess. You’d have to think though that if they had Dan Williams graded equally they’d have taken him – Without Robbins, there’s an obvious roster spot for a DT…

And I as I write this, Derrick Morgan goes tot he Tians at #16. Something tells me we’ll be trying to compare these guys for a long time.

Is Osi Umenyiora becoming too big a distraction?

      Friday, February 5th, 2010

On a WFAN interview, Osi said he would quit football if he’s not a starter next season. This could mean that he’ll work his ass off to make sure he earns a starting spot.

Or it could mean that he’s feeling entitled and attention-starved and willing to do crazy stuff (like give up millions of dollars)…

We’ve also got articles on this from Mike G and Ralph V. Seems like he just wants more money and knows as a backup he won’t likely get it.

Everyone’s talking about the Giants defense

      Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

The New York Times has a pretty objective look at Coughlin’s and players’ reactions to the bad defense. Paul Schwartz calls it a swiss cheese defense. Both articles mention an important lapse from Giants safety Michael Johnson who I think many of us would like to see replaced as much as we want Sheridan gone.

In Mike Garafolo’s review, I think Osi is the only Giants defensive guy to get a game ball. Sure the forced fumbles are nice, but I don’t think 6 sacks is nearly good enough from Osi who seems to be a liability against the run.

Gotta love a Giants win and Jacobs’ attitude

      Sunday, December 6th, 2009

“It’s extra special against Dallas. That’s absolutely a team I can’t stand. I’ve been hating Dallas ever since I knew anything about football.”

A win is extra special against Dallas. And the Giants season may not be over just yet – although it is hard not to get my hopes up after a sweet win, the Giants defense is still not looking so hot (the fumble recovery/return by Osi helped but can we can’t stop the pass). At least the defensive line is looking better.

Let’s hope Chris Snee is OK – knee injuries are pretty scary…

      Osi Umenyiora demoted?

      Friday, December 4th, 2009

Osi coming back was supposed to make the Giants defense even batter than last year despite the new defensive coordinator. That didn’t happen and Bill Sheridan has been taking some heat. At least now he’s doing something. Fred Robbins is also joining the second team. If only we had someone to take over the linebacker and safety spots now…

Giants retooling the defense in free agency

      Monday, March 2nd, 2009

      Dude!

Michael Boley, Rocky Bernard, and Chris Canty? Pretty awesome!

Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Chris Canty, Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, Rocky Bernard, and Matthia Kiwanuka is pretty awesome because all 7 of those guys are good enough to start somewhere in the NFL.

Canty is the only guy I haven’t blogged about yet. Good ESPN article here (how often does that happen?) on the signing. They say he’ll play DT for the Giants, probably replacing Robbins as a starter.

But I don’t see why he would replace Robbins, the Giants best DT. If anyone cares, Pter King made Haynesworth and Cofield his 2 all-pro defensive tackles this year. Wouldn’t we better off demoting Cofield?

I have to think Canty willl see some time at DE as well because we have 3 guys who play only DT (Robbins, Cofield, Bernard) and 4 full time DTs seems like one too many.

6 years and 42 million makes him the Giants most expensive acqusition yet. Clearly they expect big things from the guy.

Nice video here. Says the Giants have the best offensive line + the best defensive line. That means we’re gonna win some games!

Scouts for the Giants hard at work

Interesting article here on Giants’ scouts and how they find guys like Brandon Jacobs and Osi Umenyiora.

      Injuries for Giants vs. Cowboys

      Thursday, October 30th, 2008

This year it seems injuires have hit the Cowboys harder than the Giants. Here’s the latest injury report. I think it’s worth noting that Osi doesn’t show up on injury reporsts but the Gaints are still playing without one of the better defensive ends in the league.

I’m not sure what the deal is with Fred Robbins. He said there are “bruises here and there” on his hands. Antonio Pierce said, “I have a D-tackle playing with two broken hands so that is no excuse.”

      Kiwanuka should be OK

      Saturday, September 6th, 2008

I think most Giants fans agree that our defense can kick butt even without Strahan and Umenyiora. But when Chris Samuels took a dive at the back of Kiwanuka’s ankles I realized that if we lose another DE we are in trouble.

I guess we expect bush league crap from the Redskins, but it still sucks. And of course Samuels says it was not intentional. How do you accidentally tackle someone from behind? Anyway xrays indicate Kiwanuka should be OK.

The offensive line did warn us a while back that they liked playing dirty. And the old news article are gone, but let’s not forget Robert Royal intentionally taking out Barret Green’s bad knee.
