Thank you Antonio Pierce!

The New York Giants are parting ways with Antonio Pierce who had one more year remaining on his contract (due to earn $4.75 million in salary in 2010).

Anyway, thank you to a guy who spent five years with the Giants, led the team in tackles three times, was team captain three times, and was voted to the Pro Bowl once. He’ll be remembered as a good Giant although there have been complaints about his performance and the fact that he was with Plax when the dude shot himself.

According to Pierce this cut wasn’t about his health (he ended the season on IR) or his play:

“I was shocked at first, but I’m not the one up there up in the office, and they said they felt they needed to go in another direction,” said Pierce. “They said it wasn’t my health, or the way I played, but just that – that they were going in another direction. We left everything smooth and peaceful and I’m happy about that – I felt like I said everything I needed to say to them. I’ve loved my time in New York and won’t have anything but good feelings about being with this team.”

I’m guessing that other direction means younger and faster. Giants fans will be fine with that, I know I am, but I still appreciate what Pierce did while he was here.

Best wishes to Antonio for a speedy recovery. Let’s see if Chase can step in and play big. And that goes for all the Giants who have been playing but not playing big during the losing streak.

Pierce in trouble?

You would think that the DA would worry about Plax but apparently they want to go after Pierce as well. Honestly I don’t think Pierce will get anything serious – if those reports a while back that Plax turned down three months jail time are true.

I mean think about it – they want Pierce for taking possession of the gun. What were his alternatives? The way I figure it he could have let Plax keep it and the idiot might have shot someone else. Or he could have left it lying around so any criminal could pick it up and we’d have another gun out on the streets.

Seems to me the DA is looking for another headline but this time making himself look like a dumbass.

Now if this part is true – that he brought the gun back to Plax’s house maybe he will get in a little trouble. But what was he supposed to do? Keep it for himself? Walk into a police station with the gun? I still don’t see a good alternative or criminal intent.

NFC East linebackers

This article talks about NFC East linebackers and mentions that Pierce and Boley may not get as much recognition as they deserve.

Also interesting is the focus on defense in the NFC East. We were 3,4,5, and 8 of the league’s top defenses.

I thought drama was for other teams

Usually it’s players on other teams doing stupid stuff but the Giants have stupid guys too it seems. No one has all the details but it seems Plaxico Burress and Antonio Pierce were at a night club when Plax shot himself in the leg with a gun he could not legally carry.

I guess it was also stupid that he waited 2 hours before going to the hospital but since they only kept him overnight I guess it wasn’t real serious. Surprisingly, it’s been reported that the cops haven’t talked to him yet. Plax can’t be hard to find so I guess they will talk to him eventually…

Chase Blackburn ready to replace Antonio Pierce?

I don’t want to run Pierce out of New York or anything but with his injuries we can see that he is slowing down this season. Next year I hope he’s bigger and faster and whatever but I think the Giants have to wonder if that’s realistic.

If Pierce is nearing the end of his career how happy are we with Chase Blackburn at MLB? On the first play of the game he tackled Frank Gore behind the line of scrimmage and had 10 stops total. Stats aren’t everything but he was all over the field and he did have that forced fumble.

I don’t think we can say from one game, but I’ve always been a Chase Blackburn fan. I just appreciate guys that get results because they play hard and work hard even if they don’t have the athletic tools some guys in the NFL have.

So how badly do the Giants need a new MLB? Is Blackburn the long term answer? Will Pierce be here for a while longer?
