No #1 receiver for the Giants in 2009 draft?
This article says something pretty interesting in the “Rose” section – that the receivers who will be around at the end of the first round are not #1 receiver material:
Hakeem Nicks of North Carolina, Maryland speedster Darrius Heyward-Bey, Florida’s Percy Harvin and Kenny Britt of Rutgers. None of these receivers will be No. 1s in the NFL. These players are good No. 3, maybe No. 2, receivers.
If that’s correct, then all the mock drafts are wrong since virtually all of them have us taking a wide receiver in the first. Maybe something will happen with Braylon Edwards…

Given this even better defense thanks to JR’s FA signings, if the Giants have to rely on the receivers they’ve got on the roster today, could Gilbride devise a different but effective passing scheme that keeps the defenses honest? If the new defensive talent cranks up what Spags started, and Gilbride can conjure up an offense that scores at least 1 more point than their opponents three times out of four, then the Giants will win the division and head deep into the playoffs. The question marks in my mind are Manningham and Moss… we know what we’ve got with Hixon and Smith… solid. What we don’t know is whether Manningham and Moss are ready to step up and make big plays on a consistent basis. Have they learned enough to be effective in the NFL? Maybe… without Plax and Amani occupying starting jobs, maybe these guys will step up out of necessity… because we need them to. JR won’t overpay for Edwards, resulting in a first day WR draft pick or who won’t contribute substantially in 2009. So, get the defense cranked up to destroy… aka 2000 Ravens… and look forward to “Manning to Manningham.”
