Shockey a Saint: what do you think of the Shockey trade?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

This is a big trade – Shockey for the Saints 2009 2nd and 5th round draft picks. Trading big name players has become rare in the NFL, especially when they have a few years left on their contract. Did the Giants do the right thing?

Well they did win in the playoffs and Super Bowl without Shockey. And Shockey did have some annoying drops. And Shockey did have some trouble staying healthy.

But Shockey was pretty rare in that he was a big threat receiver and a very good blocker. Shockey was easy to root for because he played hard – watching him run over safeties was fun.

In the end I think it’s a fair trade in terms of value. Obviously if we screw up the 2009 draft we’ll end up looking stupid. But if the Giants draft a couple of starters who help us win and get paid a lot less than Shockey then things will look pretty good…

What do you think? Good trade or bad trade?

NFL questions

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

This is not a Giants article but several Giants get a mention. We hear about Burress. We hears about Strahan and Barber:

12. Is Michael Strahan really retired?

Yes. And unlike “Today Show” roaming reporter Tiki Barber, whose No. 21 will be worn by rookie Kenny Phillips in ’08, Strahan’s No. 92 will never be worn by another Giant. Also unlike Tiki, he goes out as a winner. And also unlike Tiki (just one more), people in New York City actually care which network Strahan ends up at.

I like that one.

Also predicts Giants-Colts for Super Bowl XLIII.

Lorenzo Neal article

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

This article on Lorenzo Neal is quite interesting. A few years ago, many Giants fans would have killed to replace Jim Finn with Neal. Now I’m not so sure…

I bet Neal can still play, but the Giants running game seems to working quite well for now.

Glad we beat the Pats before the nerf

Monday, May 19th, 2008

This New York Times article argues that “The N.F.L.’s response to New England’s spying reflects a tolerance for cheating that is unacceptable.” They call for politicans to do something to help the NFL show kids it’s wrong to cheat.

I don’t really care what happens to the Pats but I am super happy that we beat them before the nerfs. No one can take anything away from the Giants Super Bowl win but next year apologists will be crying about the missing draft pick…

Pretty classy comments about the Giants from Tom Brady

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Tom Brady has some nice things to say about the Giants:

“And I have a lot of respect for that team because they work hard, and they have a lot of great leaders on that team. It’s kind of a blue-collar team. When you do lose a game, you at least want to lose to guys you respect. And I certainly respect those guys. I don’t respect everybody, but I do respect the Giants.”

A day in the life of an NFL scout

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

This article provides a real interesting look at the day of an NFL scout. Aaron Ross gets a very brief mention, but this is not a Giants article – very interesting though.

And while I’m linking to non-Giants stuff, how about the Dolphins talking to Jake Long about possible contract numbers?

Defense really does win championships

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Here is a great look by a Pats fan of their offensive line breakdowns or our successful pass rush depending on how you look at it.

Especially hurtful to the Pats fans seems to have been Justin Tuck eating up Logan Mankins.

Giants open season with Thursday night home game

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

These 10 predictions on the next NFL season includes one certainty:

10. Giants will open the show

The only sure thing on this list is that the ’08 season will start the same way the ’07 season ended — with the New York Giants on the field. One of the league’s newest traditions is that the Super Bowl champion opens the new season with a Thursday night home game.

In ’04, the Patriots played host to the Colts. The next year, the Raiders visited New England. In ’06, the Steelers and Dolphins played in Pittsburgh. Last year, the Saints went to Indy.

Based on the ’08 schedule formula, the Giants’ possible opponents are the Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles, 49ers, Seahawks, Ravens, Bengals and Panthers. The obvious candidate would be the Cowboys, but the NFL has yet to arrange a divisional matchup for the season-opening game.

The most likely candidate from outside the NFC East is Seattle because the Seahawks are three years removed from an NFC title and made it to the divisional round in ’07.

It’s too early to worry about who we play, but it is pretty cool knowing that we are Super Bowl champs so next season begins with the whole country watching us.

Time to gloat a bit about the Giants Super Bowl victory

We’re only going to score 17 points? OK!
