This one came out on Feb 15th so you may have seen it already. I just saw it though and thought I'd pass it along. If you offend easily, be warned that there is some bad language and some disparaging remark's about Belechik's weenie size.
Nothing too exciting, Coughlin is signed but that's no surprise. Butler is tendered and Wilson will probably leave via free agency and while we did win a Super Bowl with those guys I think we will all agree that an upgrade at safety would be nice.
It is nice to know that Tyree is trying to be a good role model for kids.
This mock draft is interesting:
31. Giants - S Reggie Smith 6’0 200 4.5 OklahomaThe mock has all 7 rounds... A punter in round 4...
I still cannot believe they beat the Patriots, anyways, they need help at safety. Wilson is a free agent and James Butler got beat like a red-headed step-child last year. Smith has great cover skills but may lack speed to play corner in the NFL. He would make a heck of a cover safety though.
Here's a video of an interview with Jerry Reese. He is pretty good at avoiding certain questions but did say some interesting things about drafting for value and need, wanting Shockey back as starting TE, and being close to signing Coughlin.
Coughlin is looking at 5 million a year.
As some of us begin reading mock drafts for 2008, this article talks about the last 2 drafts and how the rookies drafted in 2007 had a larger than expected impact.
Consider this crop: CB Aaron Ross (first round); WR Steve Smith (2); DT and long snapper Jay Alford (3); TE Kevin Boss (5); S Michael Johnson and RB Ahmad Bradshaw (7). At the same time, they signed only one free agent of note, LB Kawika Mitchell — for just a year — to fill an immediate need at the position.
Matt Walsh is willng to sell out his former employer as long as he doesn't get in trouble. I don't mean that in a bad way. I hope that all the information comes out. Cheating is bad for the NFL. Then again so is its officiating and they don't do much about that...
This article made me laugh because one politicain, an Eagles fan, wouldn't congratulate the Giants:
Murphy, a diehard Eagles fan who worked at Veterans Stadium as a security guard when he was 16, was the only House member to vote against it.Good - if the Eagles ever win anything (doubtful) I sure won't be congratulating them.“As a former 700-level security guard and lifelong Eagles fan, I couldn’t, in good conscience, vote for the New York Giants,” Murphy said Thursday. “The only thing worse would have been a resolution honoring the Dallas Cowboys.”
Peter Giunta shares a lot with Bill Burt in this very interesting read on game planning for the Pats. Defensive coaches obviously did an awesome job!
Antonio Pierce and Corey Webster get special mentions as well. Along with Justin Tuck and the rest of the Giants defensive line, they were our pro bowlers (even though we didn't have many pro bowlers)...
This article has some details on Justin Tuck's contract extension. Seems to me that the Giants got a bargain.
Here is a great look by a Pats fan of their offensive line breakdowns or our successful pass rush depending on how you look at it.
Especially hurtful to the Pats fans seems to have been Justin Tuck eating up Logan Mankins.
Well one of the questions I just asked has already been answered. Soon we should have details on signing bonus and incentives and whatnot but for now all I know is that Tynes signed a 5 year deal and will be paid $7,000,000.
This is not a huge commitment on the Giants part so it doesn't meen he is our kicker for the next 5 years. But it almost certainly means we're sticking with him for a year or two (at least).
This article raises some interesting points regarding Giants personnel. First Strahan is still great and he will want more than 4 million to come back next year.Do the Ginats really need him? Sure Tuck looks ready to take over but then who will rush from the DT spot and how are we on depth?
Second, Diehl deserves left tackle money.
Third, should we try to trade Shockey? Honestly, since he is somewhat injury prone I don't think there's a whole lot of value in a trade. He's good when healthy (when he holds onto the ball) so unless we get a nice player or pick in return we probably keep him.
Fourth, we have some free agents on defense. Kawika Mitchell played well enough. Reggie Torbor filled in well for Kiwanuka. Gibril Wilson is unrestricted and James Butler is RFA. We complained about the safeties a lot this season but they did win us a Super Bowl...
Fifth, Derrick Ward is an unrestricted free agent. While it would be nice to sign him, considering how often he sees the field I don't think he's worth big bucks.
Sixth, when do you extend guys like Jacobs, Snee, and Manning? These are core guys and Jacobs is entering the final year of his rookie contract...
Finally, do we get a new kicker. Tynes had that kick in Green Bay but he wasn't exactly Mr. Consistent out there...
Add Tim Ehrens to my idiot list. The title of his article is 'Giants acting like sore winners' but in the article he just complains about his friends teasing him. I'm a Giants fan, and I can honestly say that I haven't done too much to make Patriots fans feel bad. And I certainly don't have a problem with the way our players celebrated their Super Bowl victory.
These 10 predictions on the next NFL season includes one certainty:
10. Giants will open the showIt's too early to worry about who we play, but it is pretty cool knowing that we are Super Bowl champs so next season begins with the whole country watching us.The only sure thing on this list is that the '08 season will start the same way the '07 season ended -- with the New York Giants on the field. One of the league's newest traditions is that the Super Bowl champion opens the new season with a Thursday night home game.
In '04, the Patriots played host to the Colts. The next year, the Raiders visited New England. In '06, the Steelers and Dolphins played in Pittsburgh. Last year, the Saints went to Indy.
Based on the '08 schedule formula, the Giants' possible opponents are the Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles, 49ers, Seahawks, Ravens, Bengals and Panthers. The obvious candidate would be the Cowboys, but the NFL has yet to arrange a divisional matchup for the season-opening game.
The most likely candidate from outside the NFC East is Seattle because the Seahawks are three years removed from an NFC title and made it to the divisional round in '07.
Spagnuolo is staying with the Giants and making 2 million a year.
Coughlin will get an extension, boviosly. Maybe 5 million a year.
I wonder what's going on at offensive coordinator. Something tells me there won't be any changes there but you never know...
The Giants are offering their defensive coordinator a new contract, but they might have some competition from Snyder and the Redskins. Apparently the job will be offered to Spags or Jim Fassel. We've got a few articles on it but all we can really do as fans is wait and see:
We are the champions:
We're only going to score 17 points? OK!
A lot is being made of how he ran off the field with one second left on the clock.
Personally I don't care where little Bill goes to cry. I'm a happy Giants fan. My dad's a happy Giants fan. My friends are happy Giants fans...
A few things are changing for Giants fans now. We are probably done criticsing Eli Manning who I must say took all the criticism New York could throw his way like a real man.
We can now make fun of Tiki Barber, probably the greatest Giants running back ever. Too bad he turned into an ass and had to go criticizing his former teammates and coaches. Guess he has to shut up now.
David Tyree should see the field more as a receiver. Sure he never made too much noise in the regular season but the guy is clutch. This story has a sweet picture of his amazing catch.
Other Giants came up huge as well. David Diehl is still playing awesome at left tackle and who thinks Justin Tuck could have been named MVP?
Of course, some people still don't give the Giants enough credit. Although they do mention the "Giants furious pass rush" they blame this loss on Tom Brady's below average performace. I don't like that. Tom Brady gave his best and our defense was often better.
And that's really the end of the story. We won a New York Giants style football game. Gotta love tough defense!
Well I wasn't going to post until half time but this is a real test of the Giants heart coming up. Eli Manning's pass (not a great one but still there) is deflected by Steve Smith and intercepted by the Patriots.
The Giants could easily let this ruin their day and give the Pats all the momentum. As I write this Maroney runs for 8 yards on first down. How will the Giants respond? Gut check time.
Here's an article on how the Giants defensive backs plan to play aggressively, hoping to push Patriots receivers off their routes and mess up Tom Brady's timing.
Personally, I'd much rather see the Giants play physical defense so this article has got my hopes up.
This article mentions me and a few other Giants bloggers by name. It says I bashed a pundit for predicting the Giants would not do well.
Unfortunately, Jay Greenburg isn't mentioned by name. He's one of the idiots who said the Giants would be lucky to go 8-8 this season.
