Vinny DiTrani isn't exactly going out on a limb when he calls linebacker the Giants biggest need. We have Pierce in the middle (and maybe DiTrani is going a bit crazy when he talks about moving Pierce to WLB). Short is OK depth. Emmons is not OK depth. Who really knows with Arrington and Wilkinson. It's not a good situation.
He thinks we're OK at safety but not at cornerback. I agree with him about the cornerbacks... He also says we're OK at receiver because Toomer will be back, Moss will be a factor, and Carter is not so bad. I have to disagree here. Carter had a chance this season and didn't do enough. Moss might be a factor but only an oracle can know for sure since he didn't show anything on the field. If Toomer picks up where he left off, the world is kinder than I thought it was.
Posted by James Trotta at January 19, 2007 11:52 AMDefensive lineman,Cornerbacks, free agent linebacker or free agent runningbacks.I'd love a stocky back like Maurice Drew-Jones.A speedy guy like Brian Westbrook or someone along those lines. The linebackers should be fine except get ride of Emmons, he's too slow to cover a good tightend. That was evident in many games last year.
Posted by: Bruce Mazur at January 19, 2007 1:01 PMintresting article, i was wondering about your ideas on this years nfl draft, here is what i would like the giants to do
1 dwayne jarrett wr usc
toomer, if coming back completly healthy, will not be around forever. Jarrett is an exellent replacement. With excellent hands, jarrett is the idea guy you want to surround eli manning with. Manning's effectiveness dropped incredibly last year with toomer out of the line up, jarrett may be a player the giants have to trade up for, but no doubt he would be a perfect fit, also he grow up in new brunswick new jersey
2 brian leonard fb rugerts
may need to add a little weight to be an idea fullback in nfl, good speed, excellent hands and a great reciever, another guy you would like to put on the field with eli manning, playing football at college in the giants back yard at rugerts, also a fan favorite, reminds me alot like the on field prenense of jeremy shockey
3 Justin Harrell dt tennessee
good up the middle against the run, solid tackler, always gets a good push which will allow strahan and osi to attack the qb,good size with long arms and has a frame to bulk up if needed
4Doug Free ot northern illinios/ ben grubbs og auburn
both strong players, giants have an ageing line, pettiguot injury hurt the giants up front and whittfeild was not the idea backup, both players fit good here
5 josh wilson cb maryland
with both speed and the secondary being concerns for the giants, wilson is a guy that can step in and make his presnece felt, ecxellent speed makes him real attractive to the giants
6jonathen wade cb tennessee/ scabby piscitelli s oregen state
with concerns still looming about their secondary, the giants use this pick to strenthen the position.
7Garret wolfe rb northern illionis
another player with good speed, excellent pass catcher, fits in good after the loss of barber and compliments jacobs quite nicely, maybe the giants keep a little bit of the thunder and lightning they had before
although secondary is a major concern for the giants, look for them to adress the need early in free agency with nate clements or Asante Samuel, also look for weak side linebacker in free agency such as briggs or digss june or thomas, the giants wont draft at linebacker seeing as they already have a good amount of youth at the position
