Great Football Outsiders article says it better than I could:
The Titans’ game-tying drive involved the game’s oddest play. On fourth-and-10, Kiwanuka had Young in his grasp. Young made a pump-fake, and Kiwanuka, fearful of a roughing-the-passer penalty, released Young, who proceeded to scramble for a first-down.Believe it or not, that's only a fraction of this detailed article. Posted by James Trotta at November 29, 2006 11:44 PMThis odd looking play has led to some condemnation for Kiwanuka, but this gaffe was certainly understandable. The NFL has seen a number of questionable roughing penalties, although not an overall increase. Had Young thrown the ball and Kiwanuka tackled him, the rookie would have been everyone’s goat for picking up a personal foul. A Tennessee drive had already been extended on a personal foul when Young was stopped short of a first down.
When he released Young, the quarterback still had over 15 yards to run for a first down, but Young evaded all tacklers. Will Demps had a perfect opportunity to make a game-winning tackle but missed. Demps’ failure is more cause for reproach than Kiwanuka’s.
Young’s feint raises a difficult problem for referees and the Competition Committee. Already, it seems that some quarterbacks are testing the rules by delaying their slides to the last minute or tiptoeing down the sideline, almost trying to induce the penalty. Protecting the quarterback is an important objective, but when players stop making legitimate plays for fear of a flag, the situation needs to be reexamined.
What the hell is the big deal with what Mike Strahan said. I feel he was dead on about the media. An just when I think I can stomach Jason Smith he drones on an on incesantly about Strahan going off. i don't think what he did was going off. I don't thunk he called out Burress either. I think the media aren't to much different than the red bellied Pirhana. They smell blood an ae all over it. I suppose my vision is askew because it's not Dallas an T.O. getting all the negative attention. But really Mel Kiper Jr. who is he anyway to be spouting off about the Giants an the way the talk. I just pray for the organizations sake they get a win this weekend or we(fans) them(Giants) the whole goofy bunch is really gonna be screwed. Think it's bad now oh man just wait an see Don't say you havent been warned
I can't agree with you more. I'm so disgusted with the hypocrites that work at ESPN. They constantly criticize effort, leadership, and performance. For a month they have slammed Burress and his lack of effort. Now, they try to spin it and say Strahan publically called out Burress. They never once did they comment on how Strahan praised Burress' ability. Any one of those hypocrites would question a 3rd party who was trying to stir the pot. But when Strahan does, it becomes a male/female issue. I lost a lot of respect for their journalistic interity when ESPN over hyped TO's apparent suicide attempt. And this, is clearly ESPN trying to save face over their mishandling of Tiki's retirement announcement. Which, by the way, he's been talking about for a couple of years. GO G-Men.
Posted by: Tony Palma at December 1, 2006 2:21 AMit is true the media is out of line on this one, however the fact remains plaxico has lapses of inferior effort. what was that attempted tackle the week before when he let the pass be intercepted and stood there looking... I think it goes deeper and i believe he has a problem with the quarterback. I am a huge giant fan and want badly for them to beat dallas. at the conclusion of the season, however, there needs to be a coaching change. i cant believe the expressions he makes when something goes wrong on the field and he looks befuddled... Its his team what is he thinking
Posted by: charles at December 1, 2006 8:30 AMi'm with charles.............the coach has made some very questionable decisions..ala 52 yd field goal, etc.... and plax does come and go.........in this game consistency is imperative....there's an expression that goes 10 attaboys can be wiped out completely by 1 aw shit............peace
Posted by: besamicool at December 1, 2006 10:34 AMTotally agree,I don't think we'll see Burress next year. The draft next year will be critical we neeed another offensive tackle,a new small scatback like Tiki, and a good speedy punt and kick returner.Wide receiver is another primary need.As far as the press and ESPN,they are always full of crap. They just make stories up to get the goat of players and coaches.Have you heard the coment on the Dan Patrick radio show by Micheal Irvin who said he thinks Tony Romo has some black blood in his linage somewhere along his familt tree. Why don't they make abig deal about that on ESPN,huh.????????
