Random Thoughts and More Predictions!

Let the pessimism begin! In the last few weeks ESPN took it upon themselves to predict everything and anything they could think of about the upcoming NFL season. In the process they ranked depth charts, made playoff picks, and selected a champion.

Of course, we all know how summer predictions can sound in six months….

It seems, however, that ESPN has jumped onto the Dallas bandwagon, as with most of the nation. For someone who is a known team killer, Terrell Owens sure does bring a lot of optimism with him. Hard to argue right now though, Owens had a terrific first season with the Eagles.

The crew also picked the Redskins, of all teams, to win the division. Doesn’t Washington just seem like a one-hit team? They’re trying to repeat their 2005-2006 success too much, and I really believe they lost, instead of gaining, talent over the course of the offseason. Does anyone here really think Santana Moss is going to have another season like last year? Is Brunell going to be effective AND last sixteen games? The Redskins have a chance, like all NFC East teams, to make a run…but they really seem like the weakest team in the division right now to me.

Speaking of teams in the NFC East, what about the Eagles? Remember how dominant they were before last season? As long as Donovan McNabb is healthy, Philly can do well. Still, talent-wise they aren’t tops in the league at every position anymore.

Finally back to the Giants. Their success hinges on Eli Manning becoming an elite quarterback, or at least close to it. He has the experience and the tools to do it. Many around the sports world, John Clayton in specific comes to mind, feel his completion percentage is going to take an enormous leap. If it does, then the Giants will be a double-digit win team. The recent developments from the team, free agent signings and training camp reports, have swayed me a bit on the mighty G-Men.

So what does all this rambling sum up to? My division predictions, as of now, are

1. Dallas
2. New York
3. Philadelphia
4. Washington

Of course, in six months when Washington wins the division by one game over the Eagles, I’ll pretend this post never happened.

JAMES.....and all you wishy-washy Giants fan out there.....

Dallas will not evn go tto the playoffs this year. NOR will the 'Skins. And here's why:

Drew Bledsoe and Mark Brunell.

You all and the ESPN crew are out of your minds if you think for one second that Bledsoe will have the time he needs to throw the ball to TO. Even if TO doesn't act up, Dallas does not have a RB that can truly carry the rock 25 times. And they do not have an O-line that can protect Drew long enough to get rid of the ball. They won far too many close games last year, and that was when they had a 3rd down WR. Hate Keyshawn if you will, but he gets the chains moved. Their D will also be worse without Dat, even if Bobby and DeMarcus are ready, neither of them can cover in space. Dallas goes 8-8 next year.

The Redskins will be UNDER .500 next year. For the simple reson that even if Brunell's arm doesn't just fall off this year, Santana will not catch 3 TD's against ANYONE, much less the NYG, and if you think andre carter is anything close to Lavar Arrington, please refer to the previous paragraph, where I said you're crazy. Brandon Lloyd blah blah blah. That is the most overrated team of the decade right now.

The Eagles, on the other hand, have rebuilt, have NO pressure, have TWO good RB's and the WR's they drafted (Bloom and Avant) are highly underrated. Avant will be a very good pro.

So I'll ignore how much it disgusts me that every year everyone hates on the G-Men, and that now their media-friendly fans are buying the crap, and I'll just present the division heirarchy at the end of the reguar season:

GIANTS
Eagles
Cowboys
'Skins

And for the record, Sean Salisbury is even worse at prognostication than he was at throwing a football.

You could be right about Dallas, but I think they'll be fine. Almost the same team as last year and Owens is a definite upgrade from Johnson. I also think both Julius Jones and Barber can get the work done running for Dallas.

BTW I'm not hating on the Giants (if you look back at my previous opinions of their chances its actually exactly the opposite). I just think its a little shortsighted to get overexcited about ONE good season.

As for the Redskins...I thought I said the exact same thing you did.

And as I've said before, I just don't agree with the sentiment that you become a "wishy-washy fan" by not picking them to win a championship every year.

I think it's going to come down to Eli, if he plays like he did the first half of last season, they post a winning record and go to the play-offs. If he plays like the 2nd half of last season, well then at least we'll have some good draft picks. The D was upgraded and shouldn't have the troubles in the secondary they did last year, which is going to mean that if the offense can do it, they win. As for the rest of the division. I don't care if you give Parcells only people who've been retired for 5 yrs and rookies, any team he's coaching is one you have to be cautious of. The man knows how to win! Does that mean they'll take the division? NO, but it does mean they can be a spoiler. And Washington... always a tough game when you play on their field, another wild card. Philly? not likely to make any kind of run, I think McNabb is competent but not in the "Elite" category. Without good support around him he'll fold, and while I think his support is adequate, I don't expect it will be enough for them to win more than 6 or 7 games this year. I'd say right now the division is up for grabs, and almost anyone can potentially win it. The Giants are looking at the toughest schedule in football right now, not a good place to be, but they have the tools. If they use them right we do it.

Dallas STILL has NO offensive line.

Why does everyone think Eli will take a step backwards? The Giants are the class of the division and just watch our offensive line this year.

Posted by: brian at July 11, 2006 6:16 AM

Whose been saying hes gonna take a step backwards brian?

I haven't really heard anyone say that. No one reputable at least.

Posted by: cochise at July 11, 2006 8:26 AM

Wishy-washy was in refrence to that fact that you were high on the GIants to win the division until you deferred to the ESPN fools. Not that I think they should win every year. For a few years, I have been pretty down on what we had going, but I genuinely believe that they've put it together now. My problem with Dallas is just their identity. TO has ONLY thrived in passing offenses. Parcells (although brilliant and dangerous) has ONLY thrived in running/defensive teams. They won't be offensive juggernauts this year because of their line and their QB's feet. So while they will upset some people, I don't see them as a well balance team at all. Again, assuming TO doesn't self-implode as soon as they lose the first two games, in which case they're not even a .500 team.

Just my opinion, but it's based on analysis and complimented by loyalty.

b Co,

I think you have me confused with James. I'm cochise the other poster on this blog. My original sentiment was that the Giants would finish 7-9 and miss the playoffs.

So if anything, my opinion of the Giants changed for the better. (And for the record it was taking another look at the roster that changed my mind, not ESPN's dumb feature which will be useless in six months like I said in the article.)

Posted by: cochise at July 11, 2006 10:11 AM

You are correct cochise. I had you mistaken. If you thought the Giants were a 7-9 team before injuries and rookies, I have no idea what your basis was. I thougth Trotta wrote the original post. Either way, there is no facet of the Giants team that is weaker than the Cowboys, even WR if you consider depth (eg. sinorice moss). So I really think Dallas has much more to prove than the Giants who were crushed with a squad of UFA LBs in the playoffs. And I'll stand behind that. We have no excuse. After last season, my biggest concern is honestly the coaching.

Posted by: b Co at July 11, 2006 2:09 PM

It is entirely too difficult to anticipate what adversity teams will face (i.e. injuries, T.O. mouthing off about Bledsoe, etc) playing in the revamped power division that is the NFC east. I agree with the notion that Philly is perhaps unjustly automatically overlooked as not having a chance. I also agree that Bledsoe and Brunell are C quarterbacks at best. All that being said, it is pointless to attempt and predict anything at this point until we see how these teams jell together in the offseason. The Giants look great on paper, the schedule does not.

Posted by: It is July at July 11, 2006 7:56 PM

I'd have to agree with you on almost every point there. As the schedule lies, I'd say there isn't a single game the Giants "Can't" win. They have all the tools they need. As for the reality of the situation, they have the toughest projected schedule in football, they're playing a lot of top notch teams. Add to that away games at Dallas, Wash, Philly, all of which are tough stadiums to win in. It's going to be very difficult for them to put together another 11-5 season. As for "b Co" mentioning the coaching, that's definitely going to be a factor. Tim Lewis should have the D looking great, that's going to leave it up to the offense. And as Strahan said, "as goes Eli, so goes the Giants". If Eli can put it together this year, and they expand the playbook a little, more audibles, more shifts, they should be able to really put something together. Coaching really is a big part of this, that's why I said earlier, I wouldn't count out any team Parcells is coaching, if not as a contender, at least as a spoiler. I also think that may be what's holding back Eli's big brother, While Dungy may be good, I'm not convinced he has what it takes to win in the post season.

Posted by: michael at July 12, 2006 2:22 AM

b Co - why do you start your comment addressing me? I didn't author this post. I always think the giants are going to win it all - I'm hopelessly optimistic. Cochise is the (hopefully incorrect) realist.

Posted by: James Trotta at July 13, 2006 1:32 AM

I think b Co was right Dallas has some bad offensive blocking going on. And I don't think its gonna get any better Drew Bledsoe has been in this game for a long time and he's not getting any better. Not to say that he's not a good quarter back, but he's not gonna be any different from what we saw last year. Bledsoe is not going to be able to stay protected in the pocket long enough for T.O. to get out far enough to make big plays. And i think that all of the Dallas fans are gonna be pretty upset when they see the Giants improved defense destroying the weak offensive line of Dallas.

Washington was a little wishy washy last year until the last 5 games that they won consecutively last year which brought them up to the wild card game. But unlike the other teams in the NFC east Washington has only changed slightly if at all. they are going to try and repeat what they did last season. BUT what they did last season wasn't good enough to get them much, and if their going to try and repeat last year against a changing football league then they aren't going to get very farin the standings.

Last year for the Eagles was a bit hectic with the loss of T.O.. They will do better this year then last but it wont be by much. Last year we saw their downfall after the loss of T.O. showing that their game was focused around T.O.'s ability. And now they still don't have T.O. they have made replacements and such but they are just going to be another mediocure team.

And last the Giants. The Giants had a good team last year, until Eli went on that 6 week slump near the end of the season. but it was still good enough to get them into the playoffs. So far this summer Eli has been out training accuracy every day and has been showing alot of improvement. The giants have also recieved another wide reciever that will, when brought together with, Shockey, Toomer and Burress, make the Giants unstoppable through the air. Then there's Tiki Barber, in my opinion the best running back in the league, and when he is teamed with a great offensive line and great blocks he is a nightmare for whoever the Giants face. And the part of the giants with the greates improvement was their defense. they got another defensive linemen, a great linebacker and a good safety to ensure that no running game will gain an inch.

my predictions are

Giants
Dallas
Washington
Eagles
