Lavar Arrington: Is today the day?

Newsday is reporting that the Giants are close to a deal with Arrington. The Giants were not interested in "$18 million in guaranteed money, close to $18.5 million that linebacker Julian Peterson got from the Seattle Seahawks in a seven-year, $54-million deal last month." I wonder what Arrington will end up with?

If not today, then within the next 72 hours. He'll be a Giant a couple days before the draft. He needs that, and the Giants need that. He won't get guaranteed money close to what JP got from Seattle, but instead heavily incentivized contract provisions that shift the risk from the Giants to Lavar and his performance. Add to that the fact that Lavar has jacked up his name recognition in the marketing capital of the world during this prolonged waiting period after his first interview in New York, and he'll have an opportunity to make major revenue IF, and that's the key, IF he can stay on the field by avoiding injury, and also perform at that Pro-Bowl level again. There is however a risk, I believe, to even this heavily performance based contract strategy of the Giants with Lavar. He was known in Washington to at times take chances that left the defense with vulnerabilities for sharp QBs and Offensive Coordinators to exploit. In other words, Lavar didn't play team defense as much as his coaches would have liked, and instead went for the sack or big play when his instincts told him to. A contract based on individual vice linebacker squad or even defensive team performance may inspire Lavar to do that even more often than he did in Washington, and that would drive Coughlin absolutely nuts. That said, a Lavar signing is a major plus for the Giants defense, and EA is now able to broaden his draft options beyond the OLB gaping hole.
