The Giants defensive line might be good again

Thursday, March 10th, 2016

This is huge because seeing both your defensive and offensive line get pushed around is pretty depressing for fans. Also, teams lose when their linemen get pushed around.

So at least now, The Giants defensive line looks good on paper. They have 4 good linemen, all are 27 years old or younger. The projected starters:

JPP: Sure he has the hand injury, but he was decent last year and I think he’s more likely to improve than regress. It’s a contract year for him too.

Damon Big Snacks Harrison: One of the best run stoppers in football. Can push linemen back and take on double teams. Very nice free agent signing. Played 16 games each of the last 3 years.

Jonathan Hankins: Torn pec last year ended a disaapointing season. In 2014, Hankins was beast against both the run and pass. A fairly big question mark for 2016, I think he’ll have a great year if healthy since the other linemen should attract the majority of the attention from opposing offenses.

Olivier Vernon: Can generate some pass rush (7.5 sacks last year) and has played 16 games each of the last 4 seasons. Solid against both the run and pass.

Giants retain JPP – contract details here

Wednesday, March 9th, 2016

So the Giants need a pass rush and they could have lost their best rusher. But they didn’t. JPP will stay with the Giants for 2016. JPP gets 8.5 million guaranteed:

• Base salary: $4.25 million (fully guaranteed)
• Signing bonus: $4.25 million (fully guaranteed)

Then he gets up to 2 million more:

• Per-game roster bonuses: $1.2 million
• Workout bonus: $300,000
• Incentives: Up to $500,000 (based on sacks)

Given the Giants significant cap room, this is a great deal. There is a very high chance that JPP is a starting DE for the Giants (who else have they got?). There is a chance the JPP is the Giants best pass rusher in 2016 (who else have they got?).

7 Giants exclusive rights free agents tendered

Saturday, March 5th, 2016

The following players will be with the Giants in 2016:

RB Orleans Darkwa
WR Myles White
TE Will Tye
TE Jerome Cunningham
OG Adam Gettis
S Bennett Jackson
P Brad Wing

These players can not sign with other teams since they are exclusive rights free agents and the Giants have tendered them. The Giants could revoke the tender though – I wouldn’t say these guys are safe. We’re not looking at big investments here either. For example Darkwa’s salary will be $600,000.

Interview with Chris Snee on NJ.com analyzes Darkwa vs. The Cowboys.
