Safety, linebacker, defensive tackle: Giants draft or free agant needs
Safety, linebacker, defensive tackle are the Giants biggest needs heading into 2010. At defensive tackle the Giants have a solid player in Barry Cofield. We can hope Canty starts to make an impact. I suppose we can hope Rocky Bernard does something but there’s no reason to think he will as far as I can see. We can assume Fred Robbins is done. We need at least one body. A real player who can collapse the pocket would be dandy.
At linebacker things are pretty sad. We can hope Boley will stay healthy the whole year (even missing significant time he had more tackles than any other Giants LB). AP is serviceable at this point in his career and Goff did show signs he might be a good replacement for Antonio Pierce. Danny Clark is a joke and the fact that no one could take his job blows me away. Clearly we need a SLB at the very least.
At safety, we can hope that Kenny Phillips makes a full recovery. He is our only safety who can cover. Michael Johnson does not belong on an NFL roster. CC Brown is fine for run support but he can’t cover (not that the Giants didn’t try to make him). Aaron Rouse seems similar to CC Brown in terms of strengths and weaknesses. The Giants desperately need a safety who can cover.

An earth mover in the middle would be great, but that’s a scarce commodity in the NFL due to all the 3-4 defenses.
I’m still hopeful that with a year of experience and a new DC that Sintim might emerge as the SLB.
Reese’s #1 job is to solidify the middle of the D, from the line right, to the MLB, and back to the safeties. Let’s hope that he gives Fewell some good players to work with and they make the “D” a force once again in the NFL.
And yes, we really need a return to health by Kenny Phillips.
