Did Nicks and Manningham look better than Smith and Hixon?

      Sunday, August 30th, 2009

A question emerging from the Jets preseason win over the Giants:

Hixon came up pretty big last year replacing Plax but he hasn’t looked great this preseason and that bobble turned interception was messy.

Steve Smith also looked strong last year. He’s been pretty reliable this preseason as well but when he missed that bomb from Eli Manning…

Manningham had a drop too, to be fair, but did anyone else think that he and Nicks looked as good as our other guys?

      Summary of Giants wide receivers

      Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Good summary from Ralph V of the Giants 8 receivers. The real questions are:

Do Derek Hagen and/or David Tyree make the team?
Is Hakeem Nicks ready to contribute right away?
How will the Giants use Moss and will he deliver?
Is Manningham ready fro serious playing time?
Will Barden come in when we reach the red zone?

      Aaron Ross’s hamstring

      Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Looks like he is out until at least the first regular season game. The most disturbing quote is “Cornerback Aaron Ross, making a valiant attempt to come back from a strained left hamstring, re-injured the muscle on the second play in team drills this morning.”

No way should a starter be making valiant comebacks in August – I don’t even want to see a valiant comeback in the first part of the regular season. Let’s get Ross fully healthy please.

Let’s hope Jay Alford recovers quickly

      Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

After being carted off the field with a knee injury against the Bears, Jay Alford was apparently walking under his own power and joking around with teammates later so we may have reason to be optimistic. Let’s hope the injury is not too bad!

That would be some good news after what was otherwise a very depressing time watching the Bears dominate the Giants.

      I missed a lot in 7 days

      Friday, August 21st, 2009

I just got back from a cruise to Bermuda which you can read more about on my travel blog if you like.

I missed the Giants preseason game vs. the Panthers although I did actually catch a few minutes on the ship there were too many other things I had to do. I was torn a bit but on the ship you have to eat, see the entertainers, and get your money’s worth so I figured I could give up a preseason game. Especially when in the first 30 seconds I saw the bad guys scored a TD on an ugly looking pass play.

But there are a few things worth mentioning from the game. Eli Manning looked good calling things on the line of scrimmage – maybe he needs to get more credit for the success of the Giants running game. David Carr looked like he is a decent passer who takes bad sacks. Jacobs, Bradshaw, and Hedgecock looked very strong. There’s still no clarity at the wide receiver position.

      The defense is looking good.

More championships for Eli and the Giants?

      Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Ohm Youngmisuk writes about Ernie Accorsi’s opinion. I criticized the guy but he got the Giants a lot of the pieces they needed for their Super Bowl victory over the Patriots.

Accorsi says Eli will win us more Super Bowls. If he does, I don’t care how much money he makes. I was just happy that this post is still relevant even though I wrote it a while ago. Even 15 million a year can be justified. He needs to play like in the Super Bowl run – not like he did against Philly last season.

      Reports from camp coming in

      Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

So far most seem to be quite positive. Even if they Eli struggled in one session they say he played strong in the next session.

This one seems to focus more on the receivers. This, of course, will be a big issue considering the lack of experience there.

They all mention that Hakeem Nicks hasn’t been doing much. I wish they’d elaborate. Is he unable tog t open? Are the QBs unable to get him the ball? What’s up?

      Pierce OK

      Monday, August 3rd, 2009

The grand jury chose not to indict Antonio Pierce. Plax still has his legal troubles but we all knew that those weren’t going away. I definitely agree with this decision – It sounds to me like Pierce did the right thing.
