      Giants’ training camp observations

      Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

This Pat Kirwan article has a video (look in the upper right) that’s pretty good. He also says the Giants will be good this year. He predicts that Kenny Phillips will be a starter by opening day and that we’ll get rid of a quality vet in the secondary like Madison, Knight, or McQuarters.

      Giants tight end situation

      Friday, July 25th, 2008

Interesting interview here (audio file) where after talking about Shockey for a while Paul Dottino says the Giants should be OK with the following 3 tight ends:

      Kevin Boss – good potential
Matthews – healed from dislocated shoulder (was playing injured last year)
Johnson – added 25 pounds over offseason and is now 275

250 to 275 is a big increase! And this article says Boss is now 270-275 as well.

Shockey a Saint: what do you think of the Shockey trade?

      Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

This is a big trade – Shockey for the Saints 2009 2nd and 5th round draft picks. Trading big name players has become rare in the NFL, especially when they have a few years left on their contract. Did the Giants do the right thing?

Well they did win in the playoffs and Super Bowl without Shockey. And Shockey did have some annoying drops. And Shockey did have some trouble staying healthy.

But Shockey was pretty rare in that he was a big threat receiver and a very good blocker. Shockey was easy to root for because he played hard – watching him run over safeties was fun.

In the end I think it’s a fair trade in terms of value. Obviously if we screw up the 2009 draft we’ll end up looking stupid. But if the Giants draft a couple of starters who help us win and get paid a lot less than Shockey then things will look pretty good…

What do you think? Good trade or bad trade?

      NFC East questions

      Saturday, July 19th, 2008

This ESPN article says Tuck is not quick enough to get consistent pressure off the edge as he replaces Strahan. I saw him chased down Ladanian Tomlinson and I say he is quick enough. Let’s see what kind of season he has and hten see if I’m right or if Jeremy Green is right.

For other NFC East teams they focus on the passing game. Dallas needs someone to emerge as the #2 receiver. Philly needs a #1 receiver. He predicts that Jason Campbell will learn his new coach’s system and have a big year. We’ll see.
