The Giants defense is shaping up

      Friday, August 11th, 2006

We already know that the Giants are strong at defensive end, although it is nice that Osi is promising to get better. And we already know that the Giants defense needs to learn to work as a team.

Hopefully we’ll have some exciting (and good) news after the Ravens preseason game. Too bad the Eagles looked pretty good beating up on the Browns.

      Tim Carter performing well

      Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

This article talks about how it’s surprising that Tim carter is still healthy. It also says he may be the Giants best offensive player through training camp so far.

      Ohara coming back stronger

      Monday, August 7th, 2006

The Giants’ center was a Pro Bowl alternate last season. He was good but not great. The only real criticism of Shaun Ohara was that he lacked power. He sometimes got pushed backwards.

That should happen less since he’s stronger now. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea. With treatment, he has been able to sleep better and work harder. He says he’s in better shape than ever before and he’s over 300 pounds for the first time.

Giants’ Carson: first ILB from a 3-4 D in Canton

      Sunday, August 6th, 2006

Harry Carson is officially in the NFL Hall of Fame. Carson is the first inside linebacker from a 3-4 defense to make it to Canton.

The Daily News talks about the politics of Carson’s acceptance speech. Newsday also has an article on Carson’s speech.

      Pierce and Giants linebackers

      Sunday, August 6th, 2006

We’ve got an article on Pierce’s leadership of not only the Giants linebackers, but the entire defense. Tim Lewis thinks that Pierce has the mind it takes to become a defensive coordinator in the NFL.

Then we’ve got a master of the obvous type article that says Emmons, Pierce, and Arrington backed up by Wilkinson, Short, Blackburn, and Torbor is better than Nick Greisen, Alonzo Jackson and Kevin Lewis backed up by Jay Foreman and Marcus Lawrence.

Moving to the defensive line, we have a few interesting quotes from a cofident Osi Umenyiora.

Tim Lewis reminds us that sometime the opposing offense will run the ball. That’s why I like the Giants big linebackers, with Arrington making me especially hopeful that we can knock some runningbacks back on their butts.

Articles on the Giants corners and safety

      Friday, August 4th, 2006

We’ll start with the news on the Giants starting cornerbacks, Corey Webster and Sam Madison. While Madison has been making adjustments the last couple of years (which might explain why some people have seen him in decline), Webster looks comfortable in camp. I have no problem with Webster taking over the #1 cornerback title, as long as he earns it on talent (and not Madison’s inability).

Continuing with the secondary, we have a Will Demps article. He feels a need to establish himself as a dominant player in order to open other doors (like his modeling career).

We’ve also got a fairly routine Q & A with Coughlin. He’s not too worried about Madison but is hoping for improved communication in the secondary.

      Demps and Shockey collide

      Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Coughlin says both guys were going for the ball and it was just bad luck that Shockey got a mild concussion. Sportingnews.com focuses more on the acrimony between Shockey and Demps.

I hope it’s no big deal. We should expect our safeties to go after the ball even when contact is imminent.

      Carter and Jacobs articles

      Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

A couple of articles for you. One on Tim Carter (about how he needs to stay healthy so it’s pretty obvious).

The there’s one about Brandon Jacobs and how his role was entirely predictabel last season since 5 of his 7 TDs came from the 1 yard line. Sure it would be nice to use Jacobs more, but if Tiki is avaergaing 5 yards/carry again and the game is close I think it’s obvious you call #21.
